Lockheed did its part to promote customer comfort and convenience for both its Electra and Lodestar transport aircraft. Both had powerful twin radial engines and spacious cabins with food and beverages often served by the first flight attendants. One airline promised that a customer could “have breakfast at home, transact business 400 miles away, then dine at home—all in ONE day” by “discovering new horizons with Lockheed.” (Courtesy of Irv Lindner.)

Iowa City’s airport had come a long way since the days when Jack Knight flew the airmail planes. Its modern, well-equipped facility and large, spacious hangar was exactly what United Airlines needed for service from eastern Iowa to larger cities like Chicago, St. Louis, and Kansas City. United Airlines also leased ramp and hangar space at the Iowa City airport to other regional carriers like Mid-Continent Airlines, which transported both passengers and freight across the Midwest.
